Kaiju that you need to assemble and paint? New(ish) rules set? Cardboard buildings? This is not your father's Monsterpocalypse!!!!!

Having loved this game for so long, collected (*ahem*) all of the possible army possibilities of the original series, played in many on-line Vassal games, and run several Monpoc tournaments (Tuesday Night Terror!!), I would welcome anything that would breath life back into this great game!

Excitement -

  1. No more blind packs!!  Buy what you need to build the army that you want! Ebay was my best friend in gen 1, but now I can visit my comic book store again!
  2. Bigger miniatures! Wait, isn't that an oxymoron? MOAR detail in the scuplts does get my Mantacon buzzing! One of the things I LOVED to do, was mod my Kaiju, units and buildings. Looking forward to being able to do that again!
  3. Streamlined rules - I have always said that thinning down the rules would get more people into playing!  This is their opportunity to hit the MASS market if they do it right. Honestly, I sometimes couldn't keep up with the possibilities and combinations outside of my own monster and army.
  4. Opportunity for a wider base of players - dont mess this up Privateer Press!

Reservations -

  1. Fool me once, shame on you! Fool me twice, and I'm out hundereds of more dollars! I certainly feel PP has a black eye for not finishing the series and for closing it's doors on Monpoc. Riddled with dissapontment, poor communication, and a sense of abandonment, I don't feel I can trust PP.
  2. I have backed the "Bones" series of Kickstarters and now have over 600 miniatures! I have painted 7. While I love to paint, I simply cannot find the time. Will paint be mandatory for tournament play (like it s for other miniature games)?  I do have a rattle can - what is the definition of "painted"anyway?
  3. Cardboard buildings? Really? Cardboard? Psshhhh
  4. Streamlined rules (point-counter point) - If they mess with the rules too much, I will miss the "chess on crack" feeling I got everytime I played.
  5. Slow to release factions - I'm REALLY hoping that this will not be as slow as before. I want to play, what I want to play, and it's not in the first set.

I'm also excited about the re-release! I played the game when it originally came out and stuck it on my shelf disappointed when it suddenly evaporated. Over the last year I got a wild hair and started collecting the models from waves 1-3 that I didn't have and eventually got them all through buying heavily discounted cases online. I haven't gotten a chance to do much playing but collecting the figures really got me interested in the game again and, for me, this announcement was perfect timing!

I'm really looking forward to streamlined rules but, like you, I hope they don't go too far. One of the things I liked about the game was its complex strategy and if they dumb it down too much it'll lose me. My favorite part about the game was the resource management. Trying to balance the dice pools brought a new puzzle to solve every turn and I really hope they keep that mechanic.

It would be nice to be able to use the models that I already have but I understand PP's need to make money off the release. Plus, if I want the game to be successful I'll need to contribute. If the game fails and all I did was complain and didn't buy anything I don't think I would have the right to be upset...especially if PP puts actual effort into maintaining the game this time. :-)

I am a bit worried about having to paint these enormous models myself. I am a poor painter at best and I am intimidated at the thought of ruining a beautiful model with my mediocre skills. I'll give it a try but I'm not expecting much.

The other worry is cost. Some of the larger PP models are expensive and that will limit how much I would be willing to purchase. Part of the fun of the 1.0 release was having a vast array of models to choose from to try different strategies. If the models are too aggressively priced then it'll limit the variety of forces that I'll be able to field and might impact replayability.

Even with those concerns I am cautiously optimistic. So far I'm in but I'll be keeping a close eye on the information coming out over the next few months.
